| How do you shield a child from tactless people? |

M turned 19 months a few days ago. And some people are surprised that he couldn't say a word yet; some believe every child has his/her own phase in talking (just like some would walk later than others). I stay away from the "unbelievers" as much as I could. We go away. But how far can one stay away? On Wednesday we went to this one playground that we frequent. I like it there despite the crowd because I feel safer there (health-wise) and M loves the big wooden train that they have there. Then came the inevitable-- a nanny asked me how old M was and so I asked her how old her kid was. Her kid was 17months old and can speak a lot of words already. I told her that M couldn't say a word yet except if we count the "thhhheee" maybe when he's referring to a "tree" (then he says "thhhheee" or "tdhaaa" to everything he sees-- a car, a truck, a train). And "a-dah-adah" when I ask him to count. So I guess we don't have valid words to count yet, huh? Anyways... It was too late when I realized how M felt while this nanny was telling me (yes, I was holding M then) how his mom should be worried now because he isn't saying a word yet. Not knowing a lot (except for my belief that every child has his own phase), I shut my mouth. But I felt bad for M. I had to take him somewhere quiet after that, sat him on my lap and talked to him. I told him he is okay, there's nothing wrong with him, and I know he'll talk soon. Then I gave him a hug. We walked home with a heavy heart (I had). But hey! M does babbles and a few weeks ago he can make the sounds "bzzzzz" and "tsk-tsk.." and "eeeeeeee" when I ask him what a bee, a lizard, and a cat say, respectively. And soon enough, on Friday he started saying "caaah" referring to a "car" (I can teach him to say "casters" soon as I teach him the parts of his toy cars). I am happy for him. I guess he takes criticism constructively, eh? I hope he does. |
