Where's My Bra?
Thursday, 23 July 2009

Grandma had two visitors yesterday.

Christine, the nurse, did her weekly check-up in the morning. She suggested to keep Grandma's tube at all time as her oxygen drops down to 80s. Lowest in normal level should be 92, she said. Lower than that would make her feel lightheaded. My inkling was confirmed. She suggested that I give her lots of fluid, too. That was in my plan. I know she loves to nibble on ice, too. I'm giving her a treat from time to time-- that is, whenever I can run downstairs to get some ice. She gets tired so fast and has been throwing up a lot lately. I feel better whenever I hear her burping. Burping is good.

Olga, the other night shifter, visited us in the afternoon. She said she won't be able to make it on Friday. She usually gives Grandma a full bath on Fridays. She's the only one who could convince Grandma to do that but I was taught how to give her a sponge bath. I am not satisfied. I like her to smell fresh all the time.

I was surprised when I saw her come out of the bathroom yesterday. Olga dressed her up with some checkered polo and a pair of pants. Oh my. A pair of pants. Underneath, her pull-ups.

"You have a date, grandma?"

She looked pleased but I don't think she was comfortable in her pants. I was a little bit worried about the pants. It's summer and she goes to the bathroom a lot of times during the day. She'll have a hard time taking it down when she had to do her business. But I let her enjoy the day although she'd rather rest and go to bed.

"You look pretty to go to bed, grandma."
"Well, the bed looks pretty, too."

She really wanted to sleep all day. I let her sit on her cushioned chair for a little while. I was giving her cold water to drink every 15 or 20 minutes. Two glasses a day, sometimes less, that's how much water she'd usually have. That's not good, I thought. So I'll try to give her more now.

She asked to be transferred to her bed after an hour. She said she feels woozy. We had to give her a pill for nausea and we had to convince her to have her dinner in the kitchen. She even wanted to skip dinner. She did not. It's a lovely day and she's all dressed up. I know she enjoyed the day. I had to change her clothes before she retires to bed for the night though. She agreed.

"Party is over. Let's change you in a more comfortable dress," I told her.
"Hmmm..." she was looking for something beneath her polo, "where's my bra?"
"Grandma, you went to a party without a bra?!"

We were both laughing. She was trying to do something while I was trying to change her pull-ups.

"We're so busy down here," she said.
"Yes we are, Grandma."

I tucked her into bed at 8:30pm. The phone rang at 9pm. It was her night caller. I have a separate story for that.
