True for some. And it could be true for me if I did not think and act fast. My 'biyahilo' thing is a blessing in disguise after all. My old phone, Pammy, died before its contract ended. Pammy has no data feature. Just pure text and call. For me, that was enough, since I got Pido, my iTouch; I could get online wherever there is free wifi. Then I thought I needed more when the people from work started turning off their wifi. I got Dida, a Droid X. Since I already have an iTouch, which is basically almost the same with iPhone4, I decided to try Google Android. I like the challenge, I guess. Android is a new operating system (well, guess what? I still prefer Mac over any other OS). Anyways... to go back to my topic; I started reading the book, Hamlet's Blackberry by William Powers, which coincidentally, is about unplugging yourself from the 'connected' world. I know I have the control over myself-- the urge of getting connected all the time. Anyway, Facebook, Twitter, and the like, are my only way of getting in touch with those people who really matter to me; sadly, they are so far away (I am not just talking about a few states away here. I also mean country-far; continent-far; in simple words, thousands of miles away). So when I got Dida, I started chatting, too, whenever I am free, like, during my bus or train rides. I started emailing. I started reading eBooks; news (I downloaded a Philippine news app, too); browsing. I plugged myself big time! (Dida is good. I don't think we need to resort to wilson electronics cell booster any time soon.) Then came the worst of my 'biyahilo' (motion sickness). I had to stop reading and typing, not because I wanted to but because I needed to. And I felt better traveling again. It was then that I made a promise to myself that I shall never read (not even those posters on buses) again when in motion. Yesterday was my first day. I went home all good last night. No biyahilo. Thank God. Yes, I am unplugging myself; but hey, only when I am traveling, eh? |
