(Not So) First Time In My Life
Tuesday, 08 April 2008

I am blogging because I want to remember. Someday, somehow I will forget about some small details in my life and I will regret it-- I mean, not remembering. So here I am again. I will share something that I have probably told some of you already but I am sharing some more as I am not good in really relaying my stories via normal conversations.

It was around two in the afternoon yesterday when I decided to eat at the Krispy Creme store in Greenhills. I have badminton games at 3pm but none of my friends were at the area yet so I was left with no choice but to eat alone.

He must have noticed me cross the road as he was seated by the huge clear glass window, get inside the store, put my order and find my seat at one of the bar-type area. He must have noticed me or not at all...

The place was jampacked (I wonder why people love Krispy Kreme). Anyway, I was there to try some of their doughnuts. I have tried their original so I opted for their NY Cheesecake doughnut and had their original coffee freeze with whipped cream. The cashier asked for my name, said they will bring my coffee to my seat, which was good because I don't want to wait in line for that as I have yet to secure my seat.

Saw one at once and ran to it. *phew*

As soon as I was settled on my seat, I tried a bite of my doughnut and as early as my first bite, I have decided not to order that again. It doesn't tastes like a NY cheesecake. I didn't like it. Period.

My eyes were glued to the claiming area as I was waiting for my coffee. Saw the waiter carry one cup of cold coffee with whipped cream and hoped it was mine. He started walking around and calling a name. Something like, Fay. When he came near my area, it was clear, he was calling for a Fay.

"Excuse me, is it Fay or Mae?"
I asked the waiter as he went near me. I think he got a little embarrassed.

"It could be Mae. May I know your order, ma'am?", it was the same order so he decided to leave me my coffee.

"Uhh... don't they give numbers here?"
A voice came from a guy seated next to me. For some reason, I looked at him in the eye (I don't usually do that). I guess I was thinking, he could give me a look like my soul mate did, huh? LOL. *kidding*

I was laughing inside. My first thought was, "Uh-ohh. Is that his pick-up line? At Inglesero sya! Hmmm... he could be a balikbayan. He could be my soul mate!"

"Apparently, no. They will get your name at the counter and they will go around to find you," I was a little bit controlling my laughter. I was just smiling.

"I don't usually eat doughnut and if I do, I order their originals, even in the states..." I thought the conversation has ended but I was wrong. I just gave him a slight smile at that.

"I haven't been to the U.S., I haven't tried the real one." I said but in the back of my head I was trying to remember an instance that someone brought home a box of Krispy Kremes from the U.S. and shared some to us (help me remember, people).

"I wonder. Do we have the same order of doughnut?", he continued.

"Uhh.. this is a NY cheesecake. It's my first time to try it. What's your order?" I asked him pointing to an empty saucer in front of him. He must be sitting there for a long time already.

"I think it's the same as yours," he chuckles.

"So, how was it? Did you like it?" this time, he got me hooked into the conversation. I have lightened up but I haven't taken off the idea that it could be his style.

"It's good," he said. "So, are you working here? What are you doing here today?"

"I have a game at 3pm,"
I explained, "How about you? Are you in vacation?" I was fishing this time.

Then he started talking non-stop. He's a local but travels a lot. He used to play badminton too but stopped. That he's thought of getting a franchise of Go Nuts Donuts before but did not pursue when Krispy Kreme came to the Philippines. Blah-blah-blah. Blah-blah.

"By the way, I am Ado," he finally said, his hand waiting for mine, which I had to check for sweat, of course. *ewww* I know.

"I am Mae," I told him as I took his hand and smiled back.

"I am actually waiting for my fiancee. She's somewhere, shopping. Told her I will just pick her up somewhere," he said.

"Tadu ka ah! You shouldn't have talked to me! You shouldn't have started a conversation with me. You're wasting my time!" I was screaming inside. *grrrrr* Instead, I smiled and listened to him some more.

"Funny part is, my mobile phone is running low on battery. What she did was leave me her other phone-- her very pink phone! How am I supposed to take that out in a public place, right? Girls! It has some embellishments, pa! See?!" he showed me his pocket and took off the phone with lots of dangling-thingy on it.

Yes. Some girls are like that. Something that I am not.

"You know what, it could be her technique, so no one should come near you," I told him as I was laughing hard. He's cute. Has a good set of teeth and a perfect smile. He's kinda short tho'. Shorter than what I imagined of my soul mate.

"Could be,"
he said. Then he started on another topic and some more. Like both of them have a business. Something that has something to do with health and wellness. He asked me about my job and I patiently told him that I am currently working freelance and that I am going back to the office this week. Asked me if I am the coachable kind of person or that I tend to be more focused on one thing at a time only. I told him that I am more of the coachable one and that I am not a people-person (I told him that just in case he's into a networking business). I told him that I do not like working at the front-end of things, which is very true.

"How old are you, by the way?" he continued.

"I am thirty,"
I simply said.

"Oh! I am eight years older than you," he exclaimed.

"Really? It doesn't show, huh?" which was true. He seemed younger.

Then he started talking again. I was really enjoying our conversations. I couldn't wait to tell my friends about this. It was my first time to like a guy who (I thought) was trying to hit on me! That's what you get when you're surrounded with boys. Sometimes you think the way they do. Anyway, it was fun! And I did not realize that I was conversing in English as if it was normal for me. I was comfortable.

"So, when is the wedding?" I finally asked.

"Oh! We're planning to have it by the end of this year. We just finished our seminar. You know that seminar when some couples would fall apart especially when they found out about the things that they can't compromise with their partners?" He asked.

"Yes, I know a little about that,"
I said.

"Wait, is it all right if I ask for your number?"
he said as he left his seat and asked a pen from the guard.

"It's okay,"
I said as I wrote my name and my number on a piece of paper.

"I'm sorry I ran out of calling cards but here, I am giving you my name and my number, so with my fiancee's name and number, I might just ask her to give you a call some time. She might explain something about our health and wellness business. You might get interested." he said as he took my number and I took his.

"Alright," I said.

"So what time is your game again?" he asked as he saw me looked at my watch.

"I should go now." I said as I stood up.

We both said our Thank You(s) then I left the store, never looking back. Never saved his number on my phone and probably he never did the same. But it's all good. It was one entertaining afternoon.

Something that helped me forget about what was supposed to happen at the immigration-- the lottery for the H1B visa.

I'm going to need lots of diversion this week. *sigh*
