"Grandma, how do you say, 'I am reading a book' in French?" I asked her after I read aloud for her, another story from Grandpa M's works.

She's majored French in college, she said. And before you can get that major, you have to have German as your minor.

From 12nn to 2pm, a girl named Shreejana (I did not quite get her name as her accent was hard for me to get it even if I asked her to spell it out for me. She's a Nepalese.), anyways, she came to relieve me from my duty so I can have lunch. This is how my Saturdays and Sundays would go.

Lunch was just a piece of peach. I have been eating a lot since I got here. No exercise. It's good that they serve healthy food around here. Chel, the youngest of the grandchildren, was in the kitchen baking something-- chocolate cookies, which grandma and I had when I got back from my break. I had it with coffee while grandma had hers with milk.

While on my break, I played with Mimi, the white cat, in the basement. Then I browsed at the shelf that was filled with books. I saw two copies of my all-time favorite book, The Giving Tree (by Shel Silverstein). Read it and paused in the end. It never fails, that book have powers over my being. I had to put it back on the shelf before tears roll down my cheeks. Browsed some more. Happy book... happy book... give me a happy book now... I kept telling myself while I run my fingers over the books on the shelves. French for beginners! Okay, I'm trying! I ended up with a twisted tongue while Grandma was trying to teach me the correct pronunciation of some French words. Words that I am sure I'll forget about in a blink of an eye.

"My last name is German." I told them one time while we were all having dessert. They all stared at me. I think they were waiting for the catch. And when I said nothing, Miss M finally asked, "So, what's your last name?"

"German is my last name." There is no catch and I am not kidding.

And true to my word, except for the title of this post, I have forgotten the French words that I've read today. Oh well, let me just go back to Marley and Me, I think grandma got tired laughing at me. I am better off with English books, I guess, but I'm going to try once more, when I see grandma staring at the ceiling again.
