Kids love to touch everything and put it into their mouths (even component video cables). It's how they first learn about textures. When M was at that phase I tried to tell him what was it that he's touching or holding. And tell him not to put things in his mouth. Now that he's grown older, he understands if I say, "that's the knife, and that is not your toy." He'll go to his toy box instead and get a toy, then show it to me, which is my cue to say, "yes, that is yours and that is your toy car."
Of course I was kidding about the knife.
