Day 1: Balik EHSkwela
Friday, 15 February 2008

Classroom (loading...)

Out of (high) school now? When was the last time you visited your Alma Mater? It's February once again, when most of the reunions and/or alumni homecomings are being held. Some would rather stay at home and not participate in such events, some would give much effort to join every get-together with their long-lost friends/classmates.

I have been blessed to witness one grand reunion this year: The UST-EHS 2008 GRAND REUNION. It's a 3-day event which I had the opportunity to take-part.

I am proud to be a product of UST- Education High School (EHS), batch 1994. Although I do not miss my old school that much (I can go there whenever I want) and I, honestly, was never too attached there, I am (more than) glad that I have become attached to a lot of people from my batch or from the other batches-- people from different walks of life.

Day 1 is the Balik EHSkwela.

From the multi-batch yahoogroup (UST-EHS[at]yahoogroups.com), it was amazing to watch some people finally meeting each other. It was like a grand eye-ball for a lot of us and the best part is, it is being held inside our common ground (UST).

Nanay Early (loading...)I was speechless a lot of times. Watching some people get-together after 30 years (or more) made me want to cry. A lot came from abroad. One gave up his more-than-20-years life in Japan so he could join us here (there's no turning back).

We were also blessed to have Nanay Early (I would call her that now) graced the Day 1. She's from batch 1956 and she came all the way from Pasig (commuting alone) just to be with us. She's the only one from her batch but she never had doubt in coming when she heard about the reunion. "You will never know when you're still here for the next one," I remember her words when I told her how happy I am that she's joined us.

I was touched by her stories (and just by typing these now gives me the same feeling I had during her talk). Indeed the struggles they had during their era is a lot different from what the younger generation is having.

I did not stay long for the day's event. But these questions keep popping inside my head when I was witnessing the hugging and the catching-up-after-how-many-years: How would I feel if I were in their shoes? What could have I accomplished when I reached that age?

Overwhelming. I can't find a word to describe how I felt when the event officially started. I planned not to attend the first day as I have some issues to deal with in my own little world. But I am glad I came. I AM SSSSOOO GLAD I CAME.

as they say, it's good to learn from other people's mistakes... and successes. we only have one life to live and if we can learn from the generations before us, we can save ourselves a few heartaches. thanks for sharing this post!

true. so true Jem. I look up to those people who have gone through a lot of hardships and still see life in a positive way.
