Brush. Rush. Ready for bed.
Thursday, 20 August 2009

Frequently, I brush Grandma's hair-- when she's sitting on the bed and I am waiting for her to stand up and go to the bathroom or when she's sitting on the john and I am waiting for her to show a sign that she's going to stand up and walk to bed or to the sink to brush her teeth or wash her hands. I don't want her to see herself in the mirror, with a hair like Einstein's.

She could still do a lot of things by herself but if I can make things more simple for her, I'd do that, like squeezing the toothpaste when she's done picking her toothbrush for the moment (she has two), or flushing the toilet so she wouldn't bend her right arm too much (she once complained that her right arm was aching).

Yesterday, just like the other days, I opened the cabinet, took out the toothpaste and placed it on the counter, then I took the hair brush that was inside the cabinet, too. I was ready for the routine.

"Grandma, would you like to brush your teeth after you're done there?"
"Yes, dear. I'm just trying to pull myself together and I'll do that."

It was my queue to brush her hair. So I grabbed the hair brush and started brushing her hair.

"Uhh... that's not my toothbrush, is it?"
"Haha! Grandma, this is your hair brush I am using."
"Oh! I have to make sure coz you mentioned brushing my teeth a while ago."
"We'll do that, too, Grandma...Later."
"Sure, we'll do."

Olga gave her a bath, too yesterday. It's always on Wednesday. But Grandma was trying to get her afternoon nap when Olga arrived. The fact that bathing is not Grandma's favorite "event", she gave Olga a hard time convincing her to get up from the bed. Although there are days that she'd go with Olga in one call. Yesterday was not one of those days. She hardly moved when Olga told her it's time for her bath. Olga had to force her to get up but the moment Olga left for the bathroom to check on the water, Grandma lied back in bed again. That went on for a while. But Grandma loved it after she was given a bath. All fresh and ready for bed.

"Can you call the bed to go here instead?" She was inside the bathroom. Too sleepy to walk back to bed.

I know what to do next time so Olga won't have a hard time. Chocolates!
