Manhattan then Queens.
That was the original plan. Queens, for a pictorial with Jollibee. Uh-huh! That big bee has invaded New York now.

Plan was changed to Manhattan (midtown to downtown) then Brooklyn.
We're supposed to meet-up with Kuya Marly in downtown Manhattan but he has to work. Although every plan was changed except for one (the quest for the best siopao in Chinatown), surprisingly, the day turned out a blast. We were dead-tired at the end of the day from taking the subways and walking but I would say, it was one fun day in NY for me. And I have to thank Barney... err... Carlos, for that. (hahaha!).

He is a lucky guy who took up veterinary medicine in the Philippines and is fortunate to have his degree practiced here at Uncle Sam's, not just in a veterinary clinic, but in a hospital. Lucky, I say, because he is living (one of) my dreams. He's adopted Agatha, a siamese cat who lives now with Tita Lily in their home in Brooklyn, with an amazing view of Manhattan and he's recently adopted Lego, a 5-year-old dancing daschund. See?! Lucky!

Anyways... we met up at St. Patrick's Cathedral. I guess it's my favorite meeting place in Manhattan, eh? It was where I met Lyn and Kuya Marly last week. Churches, as I have said, give me the feeling that I am closer to home. And today, I hit home thrice-- I was in Manhattan earlier than expected and by chance, passed by this church (St. Mary the Virgin Church) in W 46th St. (between Avenue Of The Americas & 7th Ave), then meeting with Carlos was at St. Patrick's Cathedral (E 51st St.), after which, he brought me to this church near Madison Square Garden, the Church of St. Francis of Assisi (W 46th St.). I guess I'd prefer the latter for its solemnity.

We took the Subway (N - Downtown) going to Canal St. to wander around Chinatown. Had lunch at Wanton Garden in Mott St.. We had wanton noodles and some roasted pork bun-- that's siopao, by the way (a lot of Chinese don't know what siopao is). Kuya Marly told us not to buy siopao there though. He asked us to find this one restaurant in Chinatown where a lot of Pinoys are buying siopao. He was right, Mei Li Wah Bakery (in Bayard St.) serves siopao (and yes, they call it "siopao"), both baked and steamed. And again, Kuya Marly was right, there are a lot of Pinoys buying dozens of siopao there (Carlos bought 3 dozens, one of which, he gave me). A Filipino guy gave us the idea of getting half-dozen steamed and half-dozen baked. He said there's another restaurant that sells good siopao but if you prefer "siopao na may taba", then opt for Mei Li Wah Bakery. We'll see... tomorrow I'll have one baked siopao for breakfast. *hehe*

Chinatown was a treat to my eyes. They have a place like our "palengke" in Pinas and their buko (coconut) is not in can (di ko nga lang alam kung mala-uhog pa ang laman nun hehehe). Carlos bought me some "kuava" (yun ang sabi ng Chinese na tindera ng bayabas eh!) and he asked the lady if he could get a piece of cherry for me to try (if it's sweet) and the lady was kind enough to give him one. The cherry was sweet. Carlos asked for some more. He took 2 pieces more. I think the lady wants to say something but she couldn't express it in English. She was speaking in Chinese when we left her fruit stand.

We left for Brooklyn via Subway (was it J or M... or F? hilo na ako dito hehe) and visited Tita Lily. The pepper steak and the pasta that she's prepared were yummy. We had a short kwentuhan though since I had to catch my ride home. It's a blessing in disguise that Franco has cancelled on our meeting. I was able to stay longer in New York. I guess Kuya is right, I know Manhattan better than they know the place. And I could say, I wuv NY, now.

There is still a lot to see and discover in NY. I just have to bring my map because I still have the tendency to lose my sense of direction.

Thanks for the fun day, Barney!
