I love going to libraries. So when I decided to get a library card in New York, where I work and live temporarily, I did my research on the requirements to get one. I did my research online and I went to one of the many branches of the New York Public Library. Here are the things I found:One, once you get a library card in New York, you can use it in branch that they have all over New York-- Manhattan, Staten Island, and Bronx. How cool is that? And two, this is what their website (nypl.org) and their posters said: Eligibility Requirements
When applying for a New York Public Library card in person, or providing proof of their identity to validate a card received in the mail, an applicant must show proof that he/she lives, works, attends school, or pays property taxes in New York State. To apply for a card: Adults may provide only one piece of identification if it is 1 of the following valid New York State IDs: Current driver's license Current photo learner's permit Current non-driver's identification I was disappointed. Since I don't have a permanent address and I have no New York ID, I know I won't have a chance to get my own library card. But I did not stop there. I told myself, I have to hear it from someone. So yesterday, when the American Museum of Natural History was closed, I decided to drop by the New York Public Library in Amsterdam. There was a lady at the counter. I am not sure if it was just a coincidence that she's the only counter that has no people lining up. The other check-out counters had long lines. There was a guy who checked out something, I followed him at once. Anyway, I just had to ask something. So I stated my case. I told her that the only ID that I have is my New Jersey driver's license. She asked for it and gave me a form to fill up at once. She said I could get inside the library yesterday if I want, I just have to show them my form and my ID. I opted not. I had to leave then. Today, I went back with my form all filled-up. The lady wasn't there so I showed my form and my ID to the guy at the same counter that I went to yesterday. He asked me if I have a New York ID. I said I don't but the lady yesterday told me it's all right. He asked me who that lady was. I told him I don't know. All I know is that she was there yesterday afternoon. He asked another crew who that girl was. They don't know. He showed them my form and my ID and they agreed to give me an ID. My precious! Yes, I have a library card now! Thank You, God! |
